Elite military formation within the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The 79th ODSHB was formed in 1979 in Mykolaiv, although at that time it had a different number - 40. The brigade received its current number in 1999.

Tavriia paratroopers participated in all major battles of the first period of the Russian-Ukrainian war: liberated Sloviansk and Krasnyi Lyman, fought the enemy at Saur-Mohyla, near Mariupol, Debaltseve. Later defended Avdiivka and Marinka.

The 79th fighters participated in the defense of Donetsk airport, earning them the nickname "cyborgs". They were visited by the only foreign journalist - photographer for the Los Angeles Times Serhii Loiko, who stayed with the defenders for four days. Photos of Mykolaiv paratroopers taken by him went around the world. Later Loiko wrote the book "Airport," with the heroes of the 79th brigade serving as prototypes.

Over ten years of the Russian-Ukrainian war, seven servicemen of the brigade received the highest national award - the title of Hero of Ukraine. Two of them - posthumously.
Paratroopers of the 79th ODSHB demonstrated the best combat qualities from the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion: high military training, courage, and resilience in battle. In recognition of this, they were awarded the honorable distinction "For Courage and Bravery" in June 2022.

The honorary name "Tavriia" was given to the brigade on November 20, 2023, on the eve of the Day of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as recognition of combat merits and reward for exemplary execution of command tasks on the battlefield.
The emblem of the 79th features the sword and wing of Archangel Michael - the patron of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Mykolaiv continues to be the permanent base.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, paratroopers of the 79th held defensive lines that the enemy could rarely pass. Sievierodonetsk, Mykolaiv, Lyman, Sloviansk, Bohorodychne, Lysychansk, Krasnohorivka, Novomykhailivka - places of combat glory of the brigade.

For fifteen months, brigade units heroically defended the suburb of Donetsk - Marinka. The enemy used the entire available arsenal of munitions against the city's defenders, including chemical weapons, but the paratroopers held their designated positions to the last. About those battles paratrooper of the 79th Mykhailo Stasula wrote the song "Beyond the Spoil Heaps", which he performed with the famous Ukrainian band "Muesli".
After the start of the full-scale invasion, paratroopers of the 79th destroyed or damaged 376 enemy tanks, 526 armored fighting vehicles (IFVs, APCs, MT-Lb), 29 artillery guns, 22 field ammunition depots. They shot down 3 aircraft and 207 operational-tactical UAVs. This is essentially several full mechanized and tank brigades.
